Deep creek Conservation park doesn't sound like a place that you'd go to wet a line but given the right conditions it can be very rewarding indeed.  Deep Creek conservation park is on the way to Cape Jervios and the easiest way to get there from Adelaide is to go to Victor Harbor and then head out on the Waitpinga Road which will take you right past the park entrance.

The western edge of the park fronts the southern ocean and the best place is to fish Blowhole Beach.  The park has an entry fee of about $6.50 and is self registration at the ranger station at the park entrance.  Payment is important for maintenance of the conservation park and they do check to see if you have paid.

To get to Blowhole Beach follow the road past the staion and down to the beach.  The road is sign posted to get to the beach car park then it's a short climb to the rocks and the beach from the car park.  The road to the car park is dirt and steep so care must be taken getting there.  Once down at sea level you are fishing in some reasonably deep water in what is know as back stairs passage.  The water is deep and when the tide is running a lot of water flows between the island and the mainland.

When I fish there I usually take a good size rod, 12 foot or so as it helps put the baits out in the deep water. Use 10 kilo line just in case something a bit bigger comes along which happens from time to time.  I like to float fish here so I use a squid float on a 20lb trace to the main line.  Depending on the time of the year I use either a paternoster rig with a size 4 or 5 hook or maybe a touch smaller, hoping for Mullett or Salmon Trout that are found in the area.

In winter it's Salmon time and some good size fish can be found in the deep creek area, so for these I would use either a pilchard bait on ganged hooks of about 2/0 in size, or my personal favorite a silver or chrome spinner.  It may be wise to take some heavy gear with you as well as the odd shark has been caught from the rocks, as they come in chasing Snapper.

Blowhole Beach is not a place to be when the wind is up or in the dead of winter but in the summer it is a sweet place to be.
