Yalata is well known for it's remote beach fishing and big Mulloway. Yalata Beach is located approximately 240km West of Ceduna and faces the Great Australian Bight. You need to book before heading to Yalata and a Permit is required to access the Yalata Indigenous Protected Area - more information can be found at http://www.yalata.org/permits.htm.
To get there you need to travel along the Eyre Highway and go a few kilometres past the Yalata Roadhouse (which is often closed so I wouldn't rely on it for fuel), and then take a left turn down the Coombra track. You'll travel for an hour or so along a dirt and sand road which can be quite soft in some places, and has some heavy corrugation.
Careful planning is required because it can get very hot, cold, wet and windy. On our trips to Yalata we will often experience each end of extreme weather over 7 days. A decent tent that can withstand high speed wind, along with shade, plenty of water, and a portable fridge or plenty of ice is crucial.
There are 15 camp sites along the beach but they are quite spread out. We take 4 wheel motorbikes for travelling from the campsite to the beach, and to move along the beach. Most campsites are reasonably close to the beach so you can get around on foot if you just plan to fish in front of your campsite. It is possible to drive your 4wd on the beach front but beware of the soft sand and the fast rising King tides.
You need to fish in the deep gutters which will not require a long cast in most places along the beach. You will still need a good size surf fishing outfit, because you'll need to fish with a heavy sinker to combat the head winds and high waves.
Salmon and squid make good bait when fishing for Mulloway. Pilchards are usually too soft and you'll find yourself baiting up too often. Silver medium or large Halco Twisty’s work great for Salmon along the beach, which you'll find frequently move through in schools if you are patient.
You'll find yourself waiting patiently for quite a few hours at a time until the Mulloway pass through the gutters, and you can usually expect 1 or 2 good size Mulloway each day. Most of our Mulloway come in at 1 metre and they make for some great surf fishing. You'll need a gaff and good timing to pull the Mulloway on the beach in between the waves!
